Program and Space
Artist-designer Fernando Abellanas inspired my project. The project encouraged me to search carefully, measure, document, and activate a residual space for personal use as a refuge. Also, it helped me to understand the spatial and programmatic potential of unplanned voids. After looking for a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble, I chose under a bridge to be my site. I built a physical model ½” scale, and I could benefit from the enormous existing beams as walls for the refuge because the small personal refuge must be embedded within the unused urban void. The space has to be safe, so I designed the refuge with a movement feature; when it is in use, it moves backward to be close to the ground, and easy to climb the ladder, which slides up and down to be away from any trouble, it moves forward and rises from the ground.
